What it's like
Thirroul Pool is a proper 50 m outdoor lap pool filled with sea water, right next to the beach and the park. It is fenced on all sides, which is unusual for a beach pool and makes it easier to keep an eye on children. A shallow toddlers pool sits alongside.
The pool replaced an older tidal pool cut into the rocks at the southern end of the beach. A citizens' committee raised money in the late 1930s and it opened in 1940. Sea water is drawn in through intake pipes running about 70 m out to sea, which council has been replacing after about 75 years of use.
When to go
From 31 October 2026 to 19 March 2027 the pool is open 6am to 7pm every day except Christmas Day. In autumn hours shorten, the pool closes on Fridays for cleaning from late April, and it closes for winter from 1 June. In very big seas, the water drawn in may not be fit for swimming and the pool can close at short notice.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is on Bath Street, Thirroul. There are toilets, change rooms and a beachfront kiosk nearby, and Thirroul's cafes are a short walk away. Thirroul station is about ten minutes' walk.
