What it's like
The pool sits right at the south end of the beach, so it is the easiest ocean pool to reach at Coogee. Its concrete walls are low enough that waves spill over at high tide and in rough seas, which keeps the water fresh but can make it choppy. It is a family favourite, with plenty of children in the water on summer days.
Randwick Council built it in 1947, paid for with Commonwealth compensation for wartime damage to Randwick's beaches. It is named after Ross Jones, a local alderman closely involved with the Coogee surf club; a plaque near the stairs remembers him.
When to go
The pool is cleaned every Monday. Council uses no chemicals, so algae can build up on the walls and floor between cleans depending on weather and tides. Calm mornings are best.
Getting there and facilities
The pool is next to Coogee Surf Life Saving Club. Toilets, showers, cafes and the Coogee bus stops are all a short walk away along the beachfront.
Good to know
No dogs, alcohol, glass or fires. Coogee Beach is patrolled in season; the pool is right next to it.
