What it's like
The pool sits in the rock shelf at the south end of the beach. It is 50 m long, and its floor is the natural rock platform rather than concrete, which gives it the feel of a real sea pool. Swell washes over the outer wall on bigger days.
Newport has had several rock pools over the years. Local accounts say the present pool, once called the Newport Rock Baths, was the seventh ocean pool built in what was then Warringah Shire, and it took its current shape in the 1930s.
When to go
Early mornings for laps, mid-morning for families. Council publishes a dated cleaning roster, and the pool is out of use for about three hours before each listed cleaning time and up to twelve hours after, depending on the seas.
Getting there and facilities
Reach the pool by the walkway at the corner of Calvert Parade and The Boulevard, or along the beach from the beach car park. There are change rooms, toilets and pay-and-display parking. A playground south of the surf club, grassy areas, electric barbecues and plenty of cafes are nearby.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards at the pool itself. The rock floor can be slippery.
