What it's like
The pool is a natural basin in the rocks at the north end of the beach, sheltered from the surf and popular with families. The beach takes its name from it: locals called this rock formation The Bar. It is a place for a calm dip rather than laps.
When to go
Calm days, ideally at mid tide. Lifeguards patrol Bar Beach daily from 8am to 4.30pm in season.
Getting there and facilities
Bar Beach is between Merewether and Newcastle Beach, on the Bathers Way coastal walk.
Good to know
The pool is natural, so the rocks and floor are uneven. Watch small children closely.
